What is the Riding Theory Test?

The Riding Theory Test (RTT) is the second theory test for anyone learning to ride a motorcycle in Singapore. To get a Class 2B licence you must pass the Basic Theory Test (BTT), the RTT and the Class 2B practical riding test. According to the Traffic Police handbook, the RTT tests your knowledge of riding safety and proper riding techniques, and how you interact with other road users while riding. The Traffic Police handbook for it is the Riding Theory Booklet.

The timing rule is different from the car test. After you pass the RTT, you must pass the Practical Riding Test within one year. If you do not, you have to retake and pass the RTT before you can apply for another practical test (Riding Theory Booklet, para 7(b)).

The test format

Number of questions50 multiple-choice questions
Time allowed50 minutes
Answer options3 per question, as shown in the sample question the Singapore Police Force published with its mock theory test
Pass markWidely reported by driving centres and guides as 45 out of 50 (90%). The Traffic Police pages we checked do not publish it, so confirm with your test centre.
Handbook languagesEnglish, Chinese, Malay and Tamil

When the Singapore Police Force launched its online mock theory test for the Basic, Final and Riding Theory Tests in 2023, it said the mock test mirrors the actual test requirement of 50 questions in 50 minutes. (That mock test was replaced on 27 March 2025 by the Driving and Riding Theory Test Practice.) That is the format our timed mock exam uses. If the pass mark really is 45, you can only afford about five wrong answers, so treat every question seriously.

What the test covers

The BTT is mostly about rules and signs for all road users. The RTT is about motorcycles: how to dress for a ride, how the machine works, how to brake, change gear and corner, and how to stay safe among cars, buses and lorries. Our 205 questions are grouped into six areas:

  • Protective gear, posture and controls: helmet rules, visors, clothing, gloves and footwear, riding posture, getting on and off, stands, the throttle, clutch, brakes and gear pedal, the instrument panel, mirrors and the steering lock.
  • Maintenance and pre-ride checks: tyre pressure and the 1.6 mm tread limit, chain slack, brake and clutch free play, engine oil, brake fluid, lights and horn, and illegal modifications.
  • Gears, braking and cornering: gear ranges, changing up and down, engine braking, emergency braking, stopping distances, centrifugal force, bends, slopes and the circuit courses.
  • Traffic rules, lanes and expressways: lane changing and lane discipline, why you should not squeeze between lanes in a jam, give-way rules, yellow boxes, roundabouts, expressways, bus lanes, headlights, mobile phones and the probation plate.
  • Defensive riding and hazards: blind spots, following distance, safe gaps, rain, floods, aquaplaning and skids, glare, wind, large vehicles, cyclists and pedestrians, overtaking and being overtaken, alcohol and fitness to ride.
  • Pillion, emergencies and penalties: carrying a pillion safely, stuck throttles, brake failure, punctures, overheating, breakdowns and accidents, insurance, and demerit points and fines from the current penalty table.

Our site does not show pictures, so every situation is described in words. In the real test you may see images, so look through the handbook as well.

Free official resources, and what we add

Be clear about this before you buy anything: the Riding Theory Booklet is a free download from the Singapore Police Force website, in English, Chinese, Malay and Tamil, and the Traffic Police offer free Driving and Riding Theory Test practice questions online. Use them. They are the best place to start.

TestReady SG is an independent practice platform. It is not affiliated with the Traffic Police or any driving centre. Here is what our pack adds:

  • 205 original questions focused on motorcycle riding, so you get plenty of extra practice after you have seen the official sets.
  • An explanation for every answer that names the handbook paragraph or the official penalty table it comes from, so you can check it yourself.
  • Practice one topic at a time, which helps with areas people find hard, like gear ranges, free-play measurements and demerit points.
  • No Singpass or driving centre account needed.
  • Penalty figures checked against the Singapore Police Force penalties table updated on 23 July 2026. Some figures printed in older materials have changed, so we use the current table.

How to prepare

  1. Read the Riding Theory Booklet from start to finish. Most RTT topics come from it.
  2. Take the free 10-question test here to see where you stand.
  3. Practise topic by topic and read every explanation, including the ones for questions you got right.
  4. Learn the numbers: 1.6 mm minimum tread, about 20 mm chain slack, 15 to 20 mm brake free play, 10 to 20 mm clutch free play, no pillion under 10 years old, 1 metre past parked vehicles, 1.5 metres past moving vehicles and cyclists, 20 metres or more for a warning triangle.
  5. Sit full timed mock exams until you score 45 or more every time, then book your test.

The Traffic Police publish RTT passing rates. For first-time candidates who trained at the three driving centres, the rates from August 2025 to July 2026 were 96% to 97%. Good preparation makes a real difference.

Three worked examples

One question from different sections of the full pack, with the answer and explanation.

Protective gear, posture and controls

Your helmet is an approved type, but you have left the chin strap undone. Is this allowed?

  1. No, it must be fastened correctly
  2. Yes, as long as the helmet is an approved type
  3. Yes, if you are only riding a short distance
Answer: A, No, it must be fastened correctly. The strap should be properly fastened under the chin. It is illegal to ride with a helmet that is not fastened correctly, and a loose helmet could come off in an accident. Riding Theory Booklet (Traffic Police, published 2 January 2026), para 47.
Maintenance and pre-ride checks

Why is it unsafe to ride with a loose drive chain?

  1. It could come off and tangle with the rear wheel
  2. It makes the speedometer read too high
  3. It drains the battery when the engine is idling
Answer: A, It could come off and tangle with the rear wheel. A loose chain could slip off the drive gear and get entangled with the rear wheel, which can lock the wheel and throw you off. Slack should not be more than 20 mm. Riding Theory Booklet (Traffic Police, published 2 January 2026), para 70.
Gears, braking and cornering

Which gear should you use to move off from a stationary position?

  1. 2nd gear
  2. 1st gear
  3. 3rd gear
Answer: B, 1st gear. First gear is used when moving off. It gives the lowest speed and is the most powerful gear, used from about 0 to 20 km/h. Riding Theory Booklet (Traffic Police, published 2 January 2026), para 93.

Questions and answers

How many questions are in the RTT, and how long do I get?

The Riding Theory Test has 50 multiple-choice questions and you get 50 minutes. The Singapore Police Force described the actual test this way when it launched its online mock theory test in 2023.

What is the RTT pass mark?

Driving centres and guides widely report that you need 45 out of 50 (90%). We could not find the pass mark stated on a Traffic Police page, so check with your driving centre when you book.

What is the difference between the BTT, FTT and RTT?

Every learner takes the BTT, which covers traffic rules, signs and signals. Car learners then take the Final Theory Test (FTT), while motorcycle learners take the Riding Theory Test (RTT), which focuses on riding safety, motorcycle control and how riders interact with other road users.

Do I need to pass the BTT before the RTT?

Yes. You must pass the Basic Theory Test before you can take the Riding Theory Test, and you must pass the RTT before you can take the Practical Riding Test for a Class 2B licence.

How long is an RTT pass valid?

After passing the RTT you must pass the Practical Riding Test within one year. Otherwise you have to retake and pass the RTT before applying for another practical test. This is shorter than the two years allowed after the car FTT.

Are these the real RTT questions?

No. All our questions are original practice questions written from the Traffic Police handbook and the official penalty table. They are not official exam questions, and TestReady SG is not linked to the Traffic Police or any driving centre.

Is there a free official RTT practice test?

Yes. The Traffic Police offer free Driving and Riding Theory Test practice questions online, and the Riding Theory Booklet is a free download. Our pack adds 205 more original questions, an explanation for every answer and practice by topic.
